Black and White

I’m a big fan of photography. Who doesn’t love looking at pictures. Our whole life we couldn’t wait to ride our bikes to Arbor Drugs and pick up our prints. “Don’t forget doubles!” And the wonder of whether or not any of them came out. That element of surprise nearly faded now but its still fun to look at  both the amateurs and the professionals. What other people see. A great photograph evokes great emotions.

When I came across my Godmother Aunt Sandy’s family photo below it was just further confirmation on the fun and the why it is important to pick up a camera and capture history now and again.

Look at these lovely ladies! One could get lost looking at a photo like this. So many reasons to love it. The fashion is tremendous, such great style the dames had back then. I love that everyone DRESSED regardless of the event, whether it be a party or to ride in a plane.

Once you get passed the fashion you start to notice the decor, the classic awning stripe on the sofa, the tray table, the rug, the drapes or the McCoy pottery vase in the background.

I love how no one is looking right into the lens. I love that about a pic. Maybe there were several cameras and they were having a time of it posing, laughing, cutting up. You can’t help but think what a grand old time everyone is having.

Its photos like these and the love of my family that inspired me to finally take that photography class I’d been thinking about. The learning curve over here is years! But what I realize is eventually you get to it and I’m happy to say I finished my first official course this week. Yea Mom.

All I could think about that first day was wishing it for everyone. Cooking, painting, photography, whatever your interest, its nice to explore it and share it with other fans. Every week we looked at each other’s photos and talked about it and it was really cool, sweet.
Very interesting to hear why everyone came. First thing the instructor asks is tell me what camera you use and what you hope to achieve from the class?

“Hi, my name is Jennifer Schoenberger, I shoot with a Nikon D60 and would like to take better interior images for my design and style blog.”

I learned a lot in six weeks. So much so I look at great photos and have a whole new world appreciation of how it came to be.  I also had no idea my camera could drive? I was barely scratching the surface and just goes to show life takes more than the owner’s manual. Kinda how I feel about my computer right now but that’s for another day Scarlett.

So in honor of all those lovely photographers out there capturing everyday beauty this post is for you. I picked a few favorites with a general black and white theme, intermixed with some gorgeous b. and w. interiors that are anything but. Enjoy the ride.

The college roomies and my friends for life at a hee-larious photo shoot in LA last year celebrating Elise’s 40th birthday. Think of the fun we’ll have looking back at this 20 years from now. I just peed my pants.

Hah, this looks familiar….even more due to my recent love affair with dirty martinis, extra olives, extra dirty (love you koko). How she manages to dance without spilling I’m still working on.

Font freak. This one is boss. Makes you wish your name was Milly.

Girlfriends in the tub, for whatever reason, brings back great memories of Vegas. The life and times you didn’t realize were so carefree, so fun and now captured forever.

What I would describe as drama decor. That chair is perfectly happy sitting there.

I don’t know what it is about this office but I picture big sht going down here (impossible right? Where’s all the mess?). But nevertheless, contracts, deals, good news, success, personal satisfaction and lots of joy in the sure and certain fact you are doing something you love.

Taking an ordinary day and making it extraordinary. That’s what this next picture represents to me.

A lovely view of the doors of Dublin with my new fee-on-say.

Every now and then a home spread comes along that reminds me why I started this gig in the first place. This house was one of them. See it in its entirety HERE under “Servants of Creativity”. I just love the moxie this couple has, the creativity, it’s everywhere. Makes you wonder how much fun are these guys to hang out with? Tons I’m sure and how lucky they are both on the same page like that.

I hope you enjoyed black and white. I’m onto a one week crash course in Photoshop and then another photog class before breaking for summer fun and hopefully some great new photos of work and family to share. Check, check on this new year’s resolution. How are you coming on yours? First quarter is over already. WTH. Next thing you know fireworks will be going off above and then back to school. Father time is not on our side. Cool your jets Father.
Updates (remember the more you keep checking back on your list, the more likely you are to achieve them, so they say):
-Kids decided on piano (and IN LOVE with the teacher) so Mom’s looking at guitar lessons solo perhaps. That’s cool.
– I’ve got all the information from my local library to start speaking that French. Here is the link for you local cats (its called the mango language program) and I’m sure every library has similar. Free to those with the card and I’ve heard its tremendous. Tres tres bien!
– Around the way, the tree’s been trimmed, carpets cleaned (already dirty), windows still a mess but I managed to get the mud room make-over in action and designed a custom shelf to be installed this month. Update soon.
– May see some pea gravel this year, may not. Since the tree’s been trimmed, I’m hoping grass grows better but if not, bring on the beloved pea gravel. Shootin for some serious digging this weekend and will hopefully photograph more boxwoods and oak leaf hydrangeas.
–  Its time to start that project of the month (oooonly three months behind). This month we’ll be covering a mirror with seashells for the never ending beach house project. Which glue to use?
Looking forward to our next chat.
Peace out lovey doves,
